The family genealogy, researched by Oren F. Morton in the History of Highland Co., says that Thomas hicklin was listed as exempted from head tax in 1766 because of extreme age, and indicated his death 1772. (Children are listed as John, Hugh,
An unnamed daughter who married a Lewis Taggert and a daughter Sarah who married a John Montgomery in1785...This does not appear to be the right family, or he has mixed them up) Listed as settlers in the area in1761, 15 years after the area opened, were Thomas Hicklin, Hugh Hicklin and John Hicklin. The roll of Captain George Wilson's Company, dated August 11,1756 has a Hugh Hicklin as a Lt. and Thomas Hicklin as a private. Thomas Hicklin is listed as owning 68 acres of land in Highland Co,in 1756 on a branch of the Bullpasture. A patent was issued on the property which is listed as adjacent to Lewis. There was an Andrew Lewis who held 348 acred, on Bullpasture, in 1746, patented in1750.

A Hugh Hicklin had a 100 acre pattent on a branch of Bull pasture in 1758 and130 acres patented on Cow Pasture in 1769. He is also listed as having purchased 217 acres of land of John Hicklin, on Bull Pasture for $166.67 in 1761,
348 acres from Andrew Lewis for $200 in 1766, and 131 acres from

Thomas Jr. for $333.33 in1770. All were on Bull Pasture.

The first time we find Thomas Hicklin Sr. (listed as such) is on 19Aug 1766 when exempted from tax because of extreme age, and later his will entered

Dinah Botkin and
Sarah Black.

In the period of 1753-54 a petition was presented in the court Of Augusta. Co. VA
asking for a road between William Wilson's Mill on Jackson's River to Captain Ashton's Mill in the Bull Pasture, being direct road to market and also convenient for the head of Green Bryer Settlers. Among the signers, Thomas, Hugh and John Hicklin.
On Jan 6,1756, Andrew Lewis sells to Thomas Hicklin (Sr. or Jr.?) for 60 pounds 348 acres on a brank of the Cowpasture River called Newfoundland Creek. Patented to Andrew Lewis 11 Jun 750.
13 Aug 1761, Thomas Hicklen (Sr. orJr.?) sells to John Hicklen(May be brother of Thomas Sr., or a son that was dead at the death ofThomas Sr. However, the will does not list any decendants of a John.The property changed hands for 50 pounds and involved 217 acres, part of 348 acres on Bull Pasture.
10 May 1765. A marriage license issued toThomas Hicklin(probably Jr.).
However, at the time it was not necessary to list the woman's name.
19 Aug.1767 Thomas Hicklin, Jr. appointed road overseer.
Some researchers have speculated that the five Hicklin brothers who came to
America from County Tyrone, Ireland could be the same family.
They were Moses, James, William,Thomas and Arthur.
The first three are thought to have settled in the Carolinas around 1730.
Records of Highland Co., VA indicate that a widow Hicklin was located on east side of Bullpasture, above McDowell creek, and George Hicklin on the west side of Bullpasture, below McDowell creek in1848 according to a map of the county suveyor.
22 March 1770, Thomas Hicklin Sr. to Thomas Hicklin Jr. for 100pounds,131 acres on Newfoundland Creek on the Cowpasture, now known as the Bull Pasture, part of 348 acres pateneted to Andrew Lewis.
20 Nov.1770 Thomas Hicklin is chosen as Guardian for Christopher Graham, aged 16, orphan of Robert Graham.(Some sources variously say Capt.Thomas Hicklin married Jane Hicklin Graham and Thomas Hicklin married Rebecca Graham. It is possible that this boy was a nephew of his wife.)
20 Nov.1772 Thomas Hicklin's estate "Paid Thomas Neil for coffin"

Early 1780 Thomas Hicklin among those allowed certificates for land for military service.Petitions filed in 1832 by Edward and John Stuart bothdeclare that they were drafted in 1781 and served under Capt. Hicklinand were present at the surrender of Cornwallis. A similar claim was filed by a John Bradshaw.
21 Aug. 1781, Thomas Hicklin recommeded Captain of the Company he formerly commanded.
22.In 1784 a list of tax delinquents included Thomas Hicklin, Jr.(removed to Kentucky). Also a James and William Hicklin(g).
From Virginia Records, the following "Greenbrier, June 23, 1790:this is to assart to all parsons to home these presence may consarn that I am imformed that sur John Hicklin has be accused of being guilty of Ravishing of my Child which I downt not believe he ever did and that she never Recieved any Damage by said hicklin to my knowledge.Sartified by me-Elizabeth Dey.teste:Jame Cooney&Jospeh Newton.
18 May 1795 (Bourbon County, KY) James and Elizabeth Garrad deed 116 acres to Thomas Hicklin for the sum of 100 pounds on the waters of Wolf Creek.
Bourbon Co. KY records An affidavit by Robert and Patrick Scott "Sometime
about the last of November, last past, at the house of the deponants, at a gather of a number of neighbours for the purpose of husking corn in the evening, a quarrel took place between James Bornasnd the said Thomas Hicklin, concerning a division of hand to work on said corn, and in the course of a few minutes an engagement insued between them and after they were parted, the deponants discovered the right ear of said Hicklin to be bleeding fresh and considerable part of the same bit off." (This deposition was at the behest of Hicklin.

The estate of Thomas Hicklin was apparised and a sale held in1807. In the disposal of property there were several mentions of a Polly Hicklin, possibly his wife, since the items involved would bethose that would be used to continue the operation of a household. One of the administrators appears to be the Robert Scott listed in the previous note.;
